Raquel Quintanilla, Head of the IRTA Animal Genetics and Improvement program, presented the BDporc platform to the Iberian pig sector last Tuesday, April 30 in Guijuelo (Salamanca). During his presentation, Quintanilla explained the benefits for the sector and for the producers themselves of being a member and incorporating their data into this collective information platform. They receive an exhaustive report on both their farms and reference values that allow comparative analysis (benchmarking) and help with decision-making to improve competitiveness.
Another argument in favor that the researcher emphasized was the annual recognition that the participating farms receive annually with the Porc d’Or awards. This year’s edition will take place on July 5 in Córdoba.
The main objective of the conference, which was attended by more than a hundred professionals from companies related to the Iberian pig sector, was to explore the latest trends, advances and solutions in the field of digitalization and monitoring of Iberian pig farms, highlighting the importance of technological tools to improve operational efficiency, sustainability and animal welfare. One of the most notable conclusions is that digitalization should be seen as an opportunity to improve the efficiency and sustainability of pig farms regardless of the production system and animal census.
