IRTA and FPAS launch a new phase of collaboration for the development of BDporc Portugal.

The agreement strengthens cooperation between both entities to promote the participation of Portuguese farms in the BDporc system and advance data analysis and management within the pig sector.

IRTA and the Portuguese Federation of Pig Producer Associations (FPAS) have signed a collaboration agreement to drive the development and management of BDporc Portugal. This initiative will expand the presence of this benchmark platform for analyzing swine production data in the neighboring country.

The agreement was signed in Jerez de los Caballeros during the 10th edition of the Iberian Golden Pig Awards (*Premios Cerdo de Oro Ibérico*) and marks a new step in the internationalization and knowledge transfer strategy associated with BDporc.

A framework for the joint exploitation of data

The agreement outlines the commitments of IRTA and FPAS regarding the joint management and use of data voluntarily provided by Portuguese pig farms and companies participating in BDporc. The collected information will generate valuable technical knowledge for the sector, facilitate the benchmarking of production indicators, and identify opportunities for operational improvements on the farms.

Under the agreement, Portuguese farms must join BDporc through FPAS, adhering to the conditions established by the platform. This collaborative model will help create a network of participating farms, providing technical and production benchmarks tailored to the specific realities of the Portuguese pig sector.

The agreement also provides for the joint development of studies, analyses, and statistics based on the collected data, aiming to transform this information into useful tools for decision-making and enhancing farm competitiveness.

To ensure the project’s successful implementation, both entities will hold periodic technical meetings—at least annually—involving representatives from IRTA and FPAS. These meetings will also include the participation of Portuguese farms enrolled in BDporc Portugal, thereby fostering the exchange of experiences and the identification of emerging needs within the sector.

BDporc, a benchmark tool with an international reach

BDporc is a platform offered by IRTA that provides the swine industry with a representative database, as well as analysis and benchmarking tools, to foster the continuous improvement of farms. With a data history dating back to the 1990s, it currently manages data on nearly one million white-coat and Iberian breeding sows, representing approximately 40% of the total Spanish herd.

Through this new collaboration, IRTA reinforces its commitment to knowledge transfer and the development of tools that drive continuous improvement in the swine sector, while cementing BDporc’s status as a benchmark platform for analyzing production data and farm competitiveness.
